HISTORY

Adali Halil was born in 1871 in the Turkish village of Edirne. He competed in many countries including France, Germany, Austria, and the US. His most memorable achievement was when he wrestled legendary American wrestler, Tom Jenkins. As a result of the match, Jenkins was defeated and left with broken ribs. The saloon was in an uproar and when asked how he felt about the match, Jenkins reportedly said "I don't know what it is, it was like a wall fell over me". Adali was then given the nickname 'The Lion of the Sultan'. He died in 1922.
